Someone was looking for the remote control.
пульт, gen. пульта, means a music stand (Portuguese estante) or an instrument for controlling something. It derives from German Pult, which comes from Latin pulpitum. The seemingly preferred word for a music stand is пюпитр, which has its origins in French pupitre, which also derives from Latin pulpitum. The Latin word is of unknown origin.
Wikipedia says that a ПДУ is a пульт дистанционного управления, hence the current usage. In German, a remote control is a Fernbedienung.
